Legal

Privacy policy

Effective from 6 September 2026. This policy applies to Backgammon Duo version 1.0 and later, on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Android.

The app is designed to minimise personal-data collection. It carries no advertising and no usage analytics, it asks for no email address and no name, and it sells nothing about you to anyone. An account is created only when you first use an online feature; if you only play offline, nothing about you leaves your device.

1. Who is responsible for your data

Backgammon Duo is made and operated by Knipsoft, a sole proprietorship registered in the Netherlands, Chamber of Commerce (KvK) number 54439108, VAT number NL001383841B13. Knipsoft is the controller for the personal data described below, within the meaning of the General Data Protection Regulation.

You can reach us about anything on this page at support@knipsoft.com. This policy forms part of our terms of service.

2. Playing offline

Offline play needs no account, no connection and no server, and sends us nothing. The engine, the doubling cube and the post-game review all run on your device, and the games you play there, the settings you choose and the statistics on the Dice fairness screen stay on your device. We never see them. If you export a game as a .mat file, that file contains the moves and the dice of the game, the result and the names of both players as the app shows them, and nothing else about you or your account; it goes wherever you send it rather than to us.

3. Your account

The first time you use an online feature, the app creates an account for you without asking for anything. It is a guest account, created without a name or email address: a random identifier and a secret that is stored on your device and used to prove the account is yours. There is no email address, no password and no name attached to it, and we cannot connect it to you as a person unless you tell us who you are yourself.

You may give the account a display name. The server adds a numeric tag to it, so that several people can call themselves Robin and still be told apart, which makes a handle such as Robin#4821. The display name and the tag are shown to the people you play, to the people whose friends list you are on, and on the ladder once your rating is out of its provisional stage. Choose a display name accordingly; a first name or a nickname is the point, a full name is not.

The app also keeps a random device identifier, generated on the device and meaningless outside our own service. Its only purpose is to count the three free online games a day against the device that played them, so that the allowance cannot simply be reset by making a new account. It is not an advertising identifier, we do not read the identifiers that Apple or Google assign for advertising, and we do not use it to recognise you anywhere else.

4. Signing in with Apple or Google

Linking your account to Sign in with Apple or to Google is optional. Its only purpose is to let you use the same account, Club membership, rating, season points and friends on another device. Without linking a sign-in provider, you can access this account only from the device where it was created; losing the device or deleting the app's data can mean losing access to the account.

When you do link it, we store the provider's user identifier and, if the provider supplies one, an email address for the purposes explained here. That identifier is what lets us find your account again on your next device. The email address — Sign in with Apple can pass on a relay address that forwards messages to your own address, and you decide whether it does — is stored only as part of that link, so the account can be recovered and so we can answer you if you write to us about it. We do not send newsletters, we do not use these addresses for marketing of any kind, and we do not pass them on.

5. What we store when you play online

Online play runs through two of our services: a relay that carries the moves of a game between the two players, and an accounts service that stores account information and game records that need to remain available after a game ends. The table below shows which data we store and why.

Personal data held by Knipsoft, and why
DataWhy we store itLegal basis
Account identifier and the secret authentication value that goes with it To have an account at all, and to know that a request comes from its owner Performance of our agreement with you
Display name and numeric tag So opponents, friends and the ladder can show who played Performance of our agreement with you
Apple or Google user identifier, and an email address only where the provider supplies one To find your account again when you sign in on another device Performance of our agreement with you
Match history of online games: the opponent, the result, the points and the rating change To show your history, to calculate ratings and season points, and to settle a disputed result Performance of our agreement with you
Glicko-2 rating and rating deviation, monthly season points and the lifetime total To run the ladder and the season Performance of our agreement with you
Friends list and pending friend requests To show who is online and to carry an invitation Performance of our agreement with you
Cloud save of one unfinished offline game, for Club members To let you continue that game on another device Performance of our agreement with you
Random device identifier To count the free daily games per device and to keep that allowance from being reset at will Our legitimate interest in offering a free allowance that is not open to abuse
Server logs, including the IP address a request came from To keep the service running, to find faults and to deal with abuse Our legitimate interest in the security and integrity of the service

There is nothing else. The app contains no chat, so there are no messages to store. It does not request access to your contacts, your location, your photos, your microphone or your camera, and it does not read anything on your device other than its own files.

6. What we do not do

There is no advertising in Backgammon Duo, and no advertising SDK in it. There is no usage-analytics SDK either: we do not measure which screens you open, how long you play, or what you tap. The game analysis in the app is a different thing entirely: it runs on your device and is not reported to us. We do not build a profile of you, we do not make automated decisions with legal effects about you, we do not sell personal data, and we do not share it with third parties for their own purposes. There are no third-party trackers on this website, and the only thing it loads from elsewhere is the typeface, from Google Fonts.

7. The Club, and RevenueCat

If you join the Club, the purchase and the payment are handled by Apple or Google in their own store, under their own terms and their own privacy policies. No card details, bank details, billing address or name as it appears on the receipt reach us. What does reach us is the receipt information the store issues and whether your account is entitled to Club features.

To know whether your account is entitled to Club features, we use RevenueCat, a service that asks the stores about the state of a purchase on our behalf and tells us the answer. RevenueCat acts as our processor under a data processing agreement. The identifier we give RevenueCat for you is your account identifier, the same random string described above, together with the receipt information the store issues for the purchase. We do not send it your display name, your email address or your match history.

8. Where your data is, and who processes it

Our own relay and accounts service run on servers in the European Union, and the data we hold ourselves is stored there. Separately from that, we use a small number of suppliers to run those servers and the services around them, and they act as processors on our instructions under written agreements. Where such a processor handles data outside the European Economic Area — RevenueCat is a company in the United States — that transfer is covered by the European Commission's standard contractual clauses, so not every processing operation takes place inside the EU.

Beyond that, the people who see anything about you are the players you play with, the people whose friends list you are on, and anyone looking at the ladder. They see only what the app shows them: your handle, the result of your game, and, on the ladder, your rating and season points. We may disclose data to a public authority where the law obliges us to, and we would tell you about it unless we are forbidden to.

9. Server logs and security

Our servers keep ordinary technical logs of the requests they receive, which include the IP address the request came from, the time, and what was asked for. We use them to find faults, to keep the service available and to recognise abuse such as an attempt to break into an account or to overwhelm the relay. They are kept for a limited period and then deleted; we do not use them to build any picture of you as a player, and they are not joined to your match history.

Traffic between the app and our servers is encrypted in transit. Access to the servers is limited to what is needed to operate them. If a data breach occurs that is likely to present a risk to you, we will report it to the Dutch Data Protection Authority within 72 hours and tell you where the law requires it.

10. How long we keep your data

Your account and the data attached to it are kept for as long as the account exists, because they are needed to provide the account's features. Season points are kept per month and the table resets at the start of each month, with your lifetime total kept alongside. Server logs are kept for a limited time for the security purposes described above and are then deleted. Backups are replaced and overwritten regularly, so the data of a deleted account also disappears from the backups over time.

11. Deleting your account

You can delete your account from inside the app, under Account, without writing to us and without waiting for us. Deleting removes the account and the personal data attached to it: the display name and tag, the friends list, the rating and its history, the season entries and any cloud save.

One thing survives, and it is worth being precise about it. A game of backgammon has two players, and the row in your opponent's match history is their record as much as it is yours. When you delete your account, those rows keep the result, the points and the rating change, but the identity of the deleted account is removed from them, so what is left says that a game was played and how it ended, not who you were. Their history and their rating therefore stay correct, and nothing in them points back at you.

Deleting the account does not cancel a subscription, because the subscription is held by Apple or Google. Cancel that in your store account, as described in the FAQ.

12. Children

Backgammon Duo is a board game and is not directed at young children. A minimum age applies to online accounts. You must be at least 13 years old to hold one, or at least 16 if you are in a country in the European Union that sets 16 as the age at which a child may consent to information society services without a parent or guardian's consent. Below that age the app may be used offline, where nothing is collected at all and no account is created. We do not knowingly hold data about a child below the applicable age; if you believe we do, write to us and we will delete the account.

13. Your rights

Under the GDPR you have the right to ask us for a copy of the personal data we hold about you, to have it corrected if it is wrong, and to have it erased. You may also ask us to restrict what we do with it, object to processing we base on a legitimate interest, and receive the data you gave us in a portable form. Much of this is faster to do yourself: your display name is editable under Account, your match history and rating are visible in the app, and deletion is a button rather than a request.

For anything you cannot do in the app, write to support@knipsoft.com. We will answer within one month. Because most accounts are guest accounts without a name or email address, we may have to ask you to prove that an account is yours before we deal with a request about it, which usually means making the request from the app or from the account's linked sign-in.

If you think we have handled your data wrongly, we would rather hear it first and put it right. You also have the right to complain to a supervisory authority — for us that is the Dutch Data Protection Authority, the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens in The Hague — or to the authority in the country where you live.

14. Changes to this policy

We may change this policy, for example when something in the app changes or the law does. The current version always lives at this address with its effective date at the top. If a change matters to you — a new purpose, a new recipient, any expansion of the personal data we collect or store — we will point it out in the app before it takes effect rather than hope you find it here.
